The 1882 Pit Disaster

One of the Trustees of 1858, Abraham Cook, was buried in the Churchyard under a stone which itself is a record of the Social History of the District at the time.

"In Memory of Abraham Cook, who departed this life October 26th 1865 aged 65 years.

Also Abraham, son of the above, aged 57 years, and Abraham his son, aged 27 years, who were both suffocated in the Golden Valley Pit on Sunday March 26th. 1882."

Abraham Cooks gravestone still stands in the Car Park of the building.
